Winter Is a Good Time to Tackle Phosphorus in Your Pond
Many nutrient-control steps do not have to wait for warm weather. Winter is a good time to remediate phosphorus in your pond, because algae then starts the season with less fuel.
Why phosphorus comes first
Excess phosphorus is one of the primary drivers of nuisance algae blooms, murky water and declining ecological health in ponds, lakes, rivers and streams. Even small amounts can fuel large amounts of algal growth. Because phosphorus is often the limiting nutrient, reducing it targets the root cause rather than the symptoms.
Two nature-based tools
- Phosphorus binders remove or inactivate phosphorus in the water column. PhosClear is a buffered alum granule that also clarifies turbid water, while EutroSORB WC is a ready-to-use liquid that rapidly and permanently inactivates phosphorus with minimal impact on water chemistry. See our recommendations.
- A diatom promoter such as Aquaritin encourages native diatoms to take up nutrients and add oxygen. It is highly concentrated — one liter treats up to four million gallons — and safe for fish, plants, wildlife and irrigation.
Set up the rest of your program
Phosphorus binders are typically combined with aeration and biological tools in a comprehensive management plan, so a winter phosphorus treatment is also the right moment to plan your spring beneficial bacteria program and check your aeration. Dosing always depends on your water body’s size and chemistry, and we provide it at no charge.
